Agriculture development set to take off in Linden

Sharma Solomon

With the recent establishment of a Region 10 Land Selection Committee, brought on through an agreement between the government of Guyana and the region, Chairman Sharma Solomon says opportunities for farmers and investors are now being made more accessible.
“We’re trying to set out a very comprehensive programme for agricultural development in Region 10, since we have farmers who are not being given the type of supporting services that will allow them to advance their agricultural skills; so, what we want to do, in a very comprehensive way, is take a scientific approach in dealing with drainage and irrigation.
“Therefore, we can plan and make better arrangements for agricultural land use, regional land use policies and utilisation.”
He further noted that investors play a very important role in the development of agriculture, and as such, he is encouraging that they make investments in certain crops.
“For example, citrus is going to be in much demand, in fact, the Citrus Growers Association of Guyana met recently with some investors from Trinidad and the primary area for this investment to take place will be the intermediate savannahs, that is, the stretch from Linden to Kwakwani.
“Outside of that, there is a large demand for cassava, and a lot of investors who want to invest in agricultural development,” he posited.
Solomon said that one of the main concerns the RDC had based on the signed agreement with the government of Guyana was the regional Land Selection Committee, which was established recently at a statutory meeting.
The committee, he said, is expected to meet sometime this week, to draft the terms of reference (ToR) for its mandate.
The process of assisting Region 10 farmers, he noted, has already begun, since, through the Land Selection Committee, they will be able to have greater access to lands.
He said they can now put their cases forward to the committee and based on those facts; a recommendation would be made for them to have access.
